the small faces @ carnaby street

PRESS RELEASE
Carnaby Street honours Small Faces and Don Arden with Green Plaque

The Small Faces, one of the most acclaimed and influential mod bands of the 60s are to have their musical achievement recognised with a Westminster City Council Green Plaque. They will share the plaque with their impresario manager, Don Arden, who passed away earlier this month. Fittingly, Arden first met the band in his Carnaby Street offices, and The Small Faces became very much part of the world-famous Carnaby Street scene.
During the band’s four-year career, the Small Faces contributed a series of classic songs to the UK’s pop cannon, including Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Itchycoo Park, Sha La La La Lee, and Lazy Sunday, the latter credited 40 years later with being the inspiration behind Blur’s huge Britpop hit, Park Life.
Don Arden’s contribution to the UK music industry throughout the 60s and 70s was considerable, introducing to the public artists who became household names: Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard were introduced from America with Arden managing the Small Faces, the Electric Light Orchestra and his son-in-law’s band Black Sabbath. Other artists such as The Move, Elkie Brooks, Wizzard and Lynsey De Paul were all amongst his clients.
The official plaque unveiling ceremony will take place on Tuesday 4th September at 2pm, at The Puma store, 52-55 Carnaby Street, with the Cabinet Minister for Planning, Cllr Robert Davis, officiating at the unveiling. Guests are expected to include former band members Kenney Jones and Jimmy Winston.
A public celebration is also scheduled for Saturday 8th September, from 12pm until 4pm, with a second unveiling accompanied by live performances from Mod artists; The Small Fakers, Darron J Connett and Redtrack. For further details about this event please check out - carnaby.co.uk
